Downtown Gig Harbor is no longer a sleepy fishing village. “The Harbor” is where you find great restaurants, boutique shopping, tap rooms and places to walk or sit and enjoy water views. With Mt Rainier as a backdrop, the location is vibrant and picturesque even on a rainy day.
Concerts are held in Skansie Brothers Park all summer long with people arriving by boat or kayak to listen to the music. The Maritime Festival is held every June and kicks off with a community parade where local schools, organizations and businesses travel down Harborview Drive with spectators lining the street and ends in Skansie Brothers Park with the festival.
The City of Gig Harbor has preserved waterfront property for its citizens with Ancich Park and Eddon Boat Park the more recent acquisitions. People take advantage of our access to the water with lots of places to rent kayaks and SUPs. We are home to the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team, five time national champions with athletes traveling to compete internationally and the Gig Harbor Dragons, a competitive and recreational Dragon Boat team. Paddlers Cup is held every April bringing human powered paddling crafts of all kinds to our city for a weekend of racing.
Most people don’t think of Gig Harbor as a winter wonderland, but every so often we get a dumping of snow. Since we are not an area of flat land, we could actually downhill ski close to the water’s edge.
